Subscription stress: how subscriptions can cause headaches for loved ones left behind

Take a moment to review the direct debits leaving your bank account each month. Chances are, you would find all kinds of payments quietly disappearing that you had almost forgotten about. Most of us have far more subscriptions than we realise, and that is not necessarily a problem. We signed up for good reasons: the enjoyment of Netflix, the convenience of Spotify, the occasional Disney+ binge. But all those subscriptions can eventually become a significant source of stress. Just not for us.

Subscriptions have become impossible to ignore

From gym memberships and zoo passes to meal kit deliveries and print newspaper subscriptions, recurring payments are woven into daily personal life. In the business world, it is no different. Microsoft 365, Adobe Creative Cloud, iCloud, Google One: these are now workplace staples. And then there is the growing wave of AI-related services, where a free tool gradually becomes a paid habit. I pay monthly for ChatGPT myself, an expense that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.

The pattern is clear: we are increasingly happy to pay modest amounts in exchange for convenience, entertainment, health, or productivity. Small individually, significant collectively.

When a subscription suddenly needs to be cancelled

Now consider this from a different angle. A loved one has passed away. As next of kin, where do you even begin when you have no overview of the subscriptions they held?

The questions multiply quickly. What are the terms? Can anything be cancelled immediately? Is this a streaming service, a software licence, or a forgotten free trial that quietly kept renewing? Bank statements need to be combed through, inboxes searched, and contact made with a long list of organisations, many of them large and impersonal. "Please hold for a moment" is not something anyone should have to hear while grieving. Yet all too often, it is exactly what happens.

Subscriptions that continue after death

Subscriptions are built to renew automatically. That is a feature designed for convenience during your lifetime, but it creates a real burden for those left behind. Direct debits keep going unless someone formally notifies the provider of the death. Most organisations will refund payments made after the fact, but whether that actually happens often depends on how much time and energy the bereaved person is willing to spend pursuing it. In the middle of grief, that is a heavy ask.

Cancelling subscriptions is rarely straightforward

Even when you know which subscriptions exist, cancelling them can be surprisingly complex. Many providers require access to the original account. Two-factor authentication may be tied to a phone that is no longer accessible. Login credentials may be unknown, lost, or expired. Some organisations also require supporting documentation, such as a death certificate, before they will act.

Every one of these steps takes time and emotional energy at a moment when both are in short supply.

Preventing subscription stress

We believed there had to be a better way. That is why we are proud to introduce the 17th folder within Life After Me: Subscriptions. It gives your loved ones a clear, organised overview of every subscription you hold, along with all the information they will need to manage or cancel those services, both during your lifetime and after your passing.

A note on document sharing: during your lifetime and after your death, you can share documents with trusted contacts and Expert Advisors

If you specify that a person may only access certain information after your death, one of those trusted appointees will need to upload your death certificate once, so that we can verify its authenticity. Once verified, all relevant information is released to your designated contacts. This means the person responsible for your Subscriptions folder can handle cancellations on your behalf, simply and without unnecessary stress.
